spring! in new york!

May 16, 2018 by liz wasden

it is no secret that i heart ny. last night, i will say, a homeless guy who had just finished filling up a GIANT bag of recyclables went to sling it around his shoulder to haul into the duane reade on seventh avenue near 12th and, well, he slung it right into me. you take the good, you take the bad, i guess.

BUT this is a great time of year for this dirty ole place! here are some things i love about spring in new york...

central park. i am a downtown girl, but it is worth the pilgrimage right now even if it's not your immediate back yard. it is sparkling and beautiful and you can just hardly believe all the work that goes into keeping it that way. there is also this little exhibit of french parks and gardens that pulls from the overall collection that is worth a duck in. don't forget, NY license lets you still get into the museum at your own price. take a twirl it is so, so dreamy to just find yourself walking amongst the monets and van goghs like it ain't no thing.

not wearing coats.

the little entrance thingies outside restaurant doors go away. it always takes me a minute to be like "what is that place" oh it's the same place i went in all winter long but now it's just kinda naked on the street.

rooftops. especially my own.

the cellist on west fourth.

you can just straight up wear flip flops to get a pedicure and not have to deal with the whole their flimsy temporary ones/saran wrap/spray/uggs situation.

speaking of nail salons - bright summer colors like clambake and jelly apple!

easier to spot celebs: ben stiller on a (not citi) bike, for instance.

better moods and outfits, just, like in general.

SNL's may sweeps.

when the trees are blooming and shedding and for a minute if you've been inside someplace for a while and you're like OMG IS IT F-ING SNOWING?

the hope that this year, this summer, this season for SURE, penn station will be better.  (it won't be)

the frying pan.

junk pier people watching (ie the christopher street pier)

soul cycle classes clear out a bit.

but mostly...you did it! you made it! it snowed the day after easter but it's NOT gonna snow again for a while and when it does, you'll feel all the magic all over again. get out there and enjoy it!
